It is here that Nasa scientists, in partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts, are attempting to explore and probe the limits of life on Earth. Yet few vehicles can survive plunging into this dark abyss. Cumulatively they account for an area of seabed equivalent to the size of Australia. Consisting of deep trenches and troughs, it extends 11km (6.8 miles) below the surface of the world's oceans. Named after Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, it is a forbidding place worthy of its name. The deepest parts of Earth's oceans are known as the hadal zone. They could even provide clues about where scientists should be searching for alien life. The hope is that the underwater discoveries they make will help to unlock some of the mysteries in outer space while also test some of the equipment and experiments needed for missions elsewhere in the Solar System.Įarth's ocean depths are surprisingly similar to some of the conditions Nasa expects to find on other worlds in our Solar System. It is a mission filled with wonder, danger and a not-insignificant risk of implosion. The US space agency is exploring the deep ocean to search for clues of what oceans on other planets could look like, and push the limits of science and technology in one of the most extreme environments on our planet. In fact, it is often claimed that we know more about the surface of Mars and the Moon than about the ocean floor on our own planet. The mantis shrimps aced the eye test if they chose the fiber representing the color wavelength they were originally trained to grab. Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, but over 80% of them remain unexplored. The food was then removed and the mantis shrimps were presented with two fibers of varying wavelengths. The animals had to first tap an optical fiber transmitting one color. In the study, mantis shrimps were trained to associate different color wavelengths with a food reward. To determine the color of an object, the mantis shrimp's eye muscles must scan the band across a particular area. The 12 photoreceptors that are sensitive to different wavelengths in our visual spectrum are located in four rows of ommatidia across the center of each eye, called the mid-band. The eyes are made up of tens of thousands of ommatidia units - long, thin clusters of photoreceptor cells. Like most insects and other crustaceans, the mantis shrimp has compound eyes that are perched on top of moving stalks. The colors indicate the approximate spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors. Our brains determine the color that we see by blending the signals that each receptor senses - like how a screen made of millions of different-colored pixels makes an image.Ī diagram of the compound eye of the mantis shrimp Odontodactylus scyllarus shows the six ommatidial rows that run through the eye's center. When light hits our eyes, the receptors turn these colors into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. Humans, for instance, have three different types of photoreceptors, each one tuned to pick up green, red, or blue wavelengths of light. Most animals have two to four types of photoceptors - cells that detect different wavelengths in electromagnetic spectrum - in their eyes. The time-saving trick helps it to survive in one of the most colorful environments on Earth - tropical coral reefs. 23 in the journal Science, Hanne Thoen of the University of Queensland and colleagues, say that the mantis shrimp perceives colors in a way that has not been documented in the animal kingdom before - the creatures immediately recognize basic colors just by scanning an object with their eyes, rather than using the brain to distinguish different colors of light. An example of this could be a map of all the fiber telecom carriers in Houston, Texas, and where the specific carrier fiber is located within the city. Network developers can also create specific maps for various telecom elemental datasets. On the other side, a company can gain a competitive advantage by knowing where the competition is located and identifying areas of potential growth. These applications can allow for telecom carriers or network operators to specify where they are located for potential customers. Today, these maps are powered by digital GIS applications. Some of the greatest benefits of these digitized maps are that they provide great depths of telecom knowledge and efficiency in entity-wide communication. The Fiber Map TodayĬreating a digital or electronic map has allowed organizations to share and communicate information quicker than ever. In the past, spreadsheets, static drawings, and paper recordings had to be made and physically handed off for an entire organization to learn of connectivity data provided with a fiber map. The digitized mapping of this network is extremely beneficial for the tech and telecom industries. The fiber-optic network is a worldwide matrix that connects continents, communities, and buildings with information and physical fiber optic cables that can run underground, above ground, and even on the bottom of the seafloor. These maps may showcase specific cables, fiber lit buildings, telecom carriers, and more within the telecommunications infrastructure. So, what is a fiber map for telecom? What is a Fiber Map?Ī fiber map is a visual representation showing the physical placement of the fiber-optic network. However, in the telecom world, this is far from the definition. If you are unfamiliar with the telecommunications world, then the term ‘fiber map’ may sound like a visual representation of where to find dietary fiber sources. In honor of Horsford's generous donations to Wellesley College, a building named Norumbega Hall was dedicated in 1886 and celebrated in a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. During the late 19th century, Eben Norton Horsford associated the name and legend of Norumbega with supposed Norse settlements on the Charles River, and built the Norumbega Tower at the confluence of Stony Brook and the Charles River in Weston, Massachusetts, where he claimed Fort Norumbega was located. In 1886, inventor Joseph Barker Stearns built a mansion named " Norumbega Castle", which still stands on US Route 1 in Camden, Maine, overlooking Penobscot Bay. The town of Bangor, Maine, commemorated the legend during the nineteenth century, naming their municipal hall "Norumbega Hall". It often appeared on subsequent European maps of North America, lying south of Acadia in what is now New England. In 1542, Jean Allefonsce reported that he had coasted south from Newfoundland and had discovered a great river. It may mean "quiet place between the rapids" or "quiet stretch of water". The word "Norumbega" was originally spelled Oranbega in Giovanni da Verrazzano's 1529 map of America, and the word is believed to derive from one of the Algonquian languages spoken in New England. It was alleged that the houses had pillars of gold and the inhabitants carried quarts of pearls on their heads. Norumbega, or Nurembega, is a legendary settlement in northeastern North America which was featured on many early maps from the 16th century until European colonization of the region. Matted but not framed.Part of Abraham Ortelius' atlas from 1570, showing "Norvmbega" among other somewhat mythical names for various areas as well as several phantom islands. 525 copies were made of this edition of Ortelius’s map. The French text on the verso, a long-winded description with little relevance to the map, was changed to a more “reader-friendly” version shortly after the publication of this edition. Above the luscious cartouche Ortelius has added three miniatures featuring the Crucifixion, the Nativity, and the Resurrection of Christ. In the bottom left hand corner is a hand colored illustration of the story of Jonah. It describes how the Dead Sea was once a fertile valley, but was transformed by an act of God into a barren sea to punish the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah. The strange anecdote written in the Dead Sea is Ortelius’s own addition. However, their mapping of the Dead Sea and surrounding areas was so controversial that Ortelius chose to leave out this region completely. Laicksteen and Sgrooten’s original map included a small inset with an extended geography. Oddly, the coastline in this first map was much more accurate than in the Sgrooten map. It covered a far more extensive territory, including part of Egypt and Syria. Ortelius had originally used another map of the Holy Land (by cartographer Tilleman Stella) in the early editions of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map is replete with fanciful bays and peninsulas, though some of the most recognizable features of the coastline, such as the outcrops of land at Haifa and Beirut are absent. However, the Levantine coastline Sgrooten (and Ortelius) depicted is hardly recognizable to modern eyes. For instance, the River Kishon is here shown as flowing from the mountains near the Sea of Galilee, not, as was previously thought, from the Sea of Galilee itself. Laicksteen took thorough and accurate notes, and the original Laicksteen and Sgrooten map contained improvements over earlier maps. Many of the original mapmakers rose to fame solely through Ortelius’s decision to include their maps in his atlas. Ortelius, the creator of the first modern atlas, collected and edited maps from all over Europe for his book. This map was condensed into the present form by Abraham Ortelius. Christian Sgrooten (here written “Schrot”), royal geographer to King Phillip II of Spain produced a nine-sheet map of Palestine in 1570 from Laikstain’s information. Based on material collected by the Dutch Astronomer Peter Laicksteen, who travelled to the Holy Land in 1556. |
